Jay Monahan’s PGA Tour salary ‘leaked’ and compared to Scottie Scheffler earnings

The annual compensation of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has sparked debate after being leaked online. According to Sportico, Monahan earned over $23 million in 2023, a figure that includes a $1.89 million base salary, $12.1 million in bonuses and incentives, $2.5 million in estimated post-retirement benefits, and $6.7 million in long-term incentive compensation.

A PGA spokesperson noted that approximately $9 million of this total is deferred to future years and subject to changes in interest rates. The hefty pay packet has drawn attention, particularly when compared to earnings of top players like world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Despite the PGA Tour generating $1.82 billion in revenue last year, critics have questioned Monahan’s salary, especially in light of his controversial handling of the PGA-LIV Golf merger.

In contrast, Scheffler earned $27.3 million in 2023, primarily from tournament winnings, making him the only individual in the golf world to surpass Monahan’s income. Highlights of Scheffler’s earnings include $4.5 million from the Players Championship, $3.6 million from the WM Phoenix Open, and notable finishes in the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and BMW Championship. The disparity between

Monahan’s administrative earnings and Scheffler’s performance-based income has fueled discussions about compensation fairness within the sport. While Monahan’s leadership roles justify a significant paycheck, the revelation of his salary underscores the growing scrutiny on executive compensation in professional sports.
