The outcome of the match hung in the balance as Hovland sank a 26-foot birdie putt, sending the crowds into a frenzy. Thomas was then tasked with a nerve-wracking five-foot putt to halve the hole and the match, which he executed with pinpoint precision.
The responsibility was solely on Thomas’s shoulders after Spieth found water with his third shot on the 18th. In high-pressure situations, Thomas proved his mettle and validated Captain Johnson’s faith in selecting him for the 2023 Ryder Cup.
However, Spieth’s struggles on the back nine allowed Team Europe to mount a comeback, leaving the impression that the Europeans were playing two-against-one in the latter stages of the match.
