On April 5, 2019, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) bestowed its highest honor, the Philippe Chatrier Award, upon the legendary tennis figure Gabriela Sabatini. This prestigious accolade, named in honor of the former ITF President, Philippe Chatrier, was introduced in 1996 to recognize remarkable contributions to the world of tennis, both on and off the court.

Gabriela Sabatini, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame since her induction in 2006, enjoyed a stellar career as a player. Her accomplishments include claiming the US Open singles title in 1990, achieving Wimbledon doubles victory in 1988, and securing an Olympic singles silver medal in Seoul during the same year. Sabatini concluded her illustrious career in 1996 with an impressive tally of 27 singles titles and 14 doubles titles. At her zenith, she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 3 in the world.

Yet, Sabatini’s contributions to tennis extend far beyond her time as a player. She remains deeply committed to the sport, dedicating a substantial portion of her efforts to promoting tennis and aiding children worldwide. Her philanthropic endeavors span collaborations with organizations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Special Olympics. Furthermore, she served as an Athlete Role Model during the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games, leaving an indelible mark on the next generation of tennis players.

David Haggerty, the President of ITF, expressed his delight at presenting the Philippe Chatrier Award to Gabriela Sabatini, describing her as a great champion and an inspirational role model. He emphasized her significant contributions to various organizations that benefit young people and aspiring tennis enthusiasts worldwide.

Responding to the honor, Gabriela Sabatini expressed her gratitude, highlighting the profound significance of receiving an award for dedicating her entire life to her tennis career. She found special meaning in receiving the award in Paris, a city that holds a special place in her heart due to her fond memories of playing there. Sabatini noted the importance of the occasion, where prestigious awards are presented, and conveyed her immense pleasure and honor at being recognized.

The presentation of the 2019 Philippe Chatrier Award to Gabriela Sabatini was scheduled to take place at the ITF World Champions Dinner in Paris on June 4, creating a fitting culmination to a career marked by excellence, sportsmanship, and a commitment to the sport of tennis.
