“I can’t play in that one, unfortunately” – Rory McIlroy gets candid on missing a LIV Golf event

Rory McIlroy recently expressed admiration for Spanish golf culture while discussing his aspirations to return to Spain, where he last played at Finca Cortesin. Ahead of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, the four-time Major champion reflected fondly on his experience with Spanish fans, calling them passionate and engaging.

McIlroy mentioned that while he hopes to compete in events like The Spanish Open and The French Open soon, his packed schedule limits his ability to participate in many tournaments across Europe. Though he voiced enthusiasm for returning to Spain, he admitted that he would not be able to compete in the annual LIV Golf event held at Valderrama due to his commitment to the PGA Tour.

McIlroy’s comment on LIV Golf came after he praised Sergio Garcia, a prominent figure in the Saudi-backed series. Calling Garcia “inspiring” and reflecting on their Ryder Cup partnership, McIlroy emphasized his admiration for his fellow golfer. On a separate note, McIlroy suggested that Donald Trump’s involvement could help mend the ongoing divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

Citing Trump’s claim that he could resolve the rift “in 15 minutes,” McIlroy hinted that the former U.S. president’s influence might bring about a resolution, especially as negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund continue amid scrutiny from the Department of Justice.
