Renowned golfer Lexi Thompson’s dedication to honing her skills from the confines of her home has sparked speculation about the potential downsides of excessive training. Although Thompson has participated in only two competitive events this year—the Drive On Championship and the Saudi Ladies International—her diligent practice routine has not gone unnoticed. However, a recent appearance at the 2023

Chevron Championship, the first LPGA major of the season, revealed a potential drawback to her rigorous regimen.

During a media interaction at the Chevron Championship, Thompson shed light on the reason behind the strips of black athletic tape adorning her wrist. Explaining that she had been practicing extensively at home, she hinted at a certain discomfort, stating, “Yeah, I’ve just been hitting so many golf balls at home, and I’ve kind of—I’m not going to say injured, but it’s hurting a little bit.” Thompson confessed that she might have overexerted herself, leading to the wrist discomfort. However, she assured that the issue was not severe and was being managed with proper care.

Thompson’s absence from the Tour over the winter didn’t translate to a break from her golf clubs. She pointed out that her wrist discomfort began about a week prior due to the sheer volume of repetitions she had subjected herself to on the driving range. The 28-year-old golfer acknowledged her hard work and attributed the issue to her rigorous practice routine. With an optimistic perspective, Thompson stated, “I’ve been grinding… Probably just a matter of that, but I’m sure it’ll be fine. All mindset.”

Having spent 13 seasons competing on the LPGA Tour, Thompson’s commitment to her craft is unquestionable. Despite her recent wrist issue, her dedicated training seems to have borne fruit. Following her time off from the taxing travel schedule, Thompson expressed feeling refreshed and in a better mindset. Her training, which she pursued diligently while also enjoying time to unwind and decompress, has positioned her well for the upcoming challenges on the course. As she embarks on her journey to clinch a second victory at the Chevron Championship, Thompson’s balanced approach to training and relaxation will undoubtedly be a key factor in her performance on the golf course.
