Lexi Thompson, an 11-time LPGA Tour winner, narrowly missed the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open, falling just short of making history as the first woman in 78 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.
After two rounds, she finished on even par at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, three shots shy of the cut line at three under par. Despite rolling in five birdies during her second round, Thompson’s bid to join the elite group of women who have made the cut in a PGA Tour event came up just short.

Thompson, at 28 years old, is only the seventh woman to play on the PGA Tour and the first in five years, having received a sponsors’ invitation to compete. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed gratitude for the warm reception from fellow players and the support of her parents. Thompson acknowledged the significance of the tournament, emphasizing the opportunity it provides for Shriners kids to live their best lives. Her motivation extends beyond personal achievement, aiming to inspire both boys and girls to pursue their dreams, whether in golf or any aspect of life.

The Shriners Children’s Open marked a special occasion for Thompson, as her Friday round of 69 became only the third round in the 60s by a woman in PGA Tour history. Despite facing challenges, including an out-of-bounds tee shot, Thompson showcased her skills with birdies at crucial moments. While she fell short of the cut, her performance resonated not just for its golfing prowess but for the inspiration she aimed to provide to young enthusiasts.

In an emotional reflection, Thompson highlighted the joy of hearing kids cheering for her, emphasizing her role in motivating them to pick up a club and pursue their aspirations. Even though the weekend eluded her, Thompson’s impact reached beyond the scorecard, leaving a lasting impression on the tournament and the aspiring golfers who witnessed her historic attempt.
