Lexi Thompson’s anticipation for the Solheim Cup is palpable. As a dedicated participant in this biennial team competition, she has notched an impressive nine and a half points for the United States throughout her five appearances. Thompson’s journey has seen highs like helping secure the Cup in 2015 and 2017, but it has also witnessed lows, including losses in 2013, 2019, and most recently in 2021.

For Thompson, 2023 marked a pivotal year, with the dates of September 22-24 circled on her calendar. She set a firm goal to qualify for her sixth U.S. Solheim Cup team, determined to represent her country against Europe at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain. However, her season was marred by adversity, threatening her spot on the team. Nonetheless, Thompson persevered, leaving no stone unturned to secure her place in Spain.

Her love for the Solheim Cup is evident in her words: “There’s just nothing like it. To be able to be part of a team and to be able to wake up, put your country’s colors on.” Her determination to make the team was unwavering, reflecting her passion for representing the Stars and Stripes.

Despite facing challenges during the LPGA Tour season, Thompson remained resilient. She pushed herself in every aspect, both on the course and in the gym, preparing tirelessly for the impending Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin.

Thompson’s role this time is unique. With extensive experience in the Solheim Cup, she is the most seasoned member of the U.S. team, surrounded by five rookies. Her 6-6-7 record across various formats makes her a formidable asset to the team. Thompson is well aware that her teammates will look up to her for guidance, especially in handling the pressures of the first tee.

She advises the rookies to focus on their game and block out the external noise, emphasizing the unparalleled experience of the first tee. Thompson’s wisdom and experience will undoubtedly be invaluable to her teammates.

Additionally, Thompson brings the unique experience of having played alongside Stacy Lewis in a Solheim Cup. She respects Lewis’s dedication and expects great things from her as the captain of this year’s U.S. team. Thompson is eager to play under someone who understands what it means to represent and win for their country in a Solheim Cup.

The U.S. team is determined to break its two-Cup losing streak and bring the trophy home. Thompson, like her teammates, is driven by the hunger to win and understands the challenge posed by the European team on home soil. She knows that their best performance is required to achieve victory at Finca Cortesin.

In her own words, Thompson expresses the team’s resolve: “We want to represent our country the best that we can… We have to bring our A plus game. We have to be ready for it and every challenge that we’re faced with and just do all we can.”

With Thompson’s experience, determination, and passion, she is undoubtedly a key player in the United States’ quest for Solheim Cup glory in 2023.
