PGA Tour’s Monahan is confident on deal over LIV Golf, uncertain about Maui tournament

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan’s confidence remains unshaken, this time centered on achieving an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund. In stark contrast to last year’s unveiling of an ambitious PGA Tour model to counter the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League, Monahan now finds himself at the negotiating table with the Saudis. Expressing his assurance, Monahan stated, “I am confident that we will reach an agreement that achieves a

positive outcome for the PGA Tour and our fans.” He highlighted the commitment of players and the Tour’s strong position to safeguard its legacy during these talks.

A year ago, Monahan had divulged intricate details of a new schedule wherein top players would contend in up to 17 tournaments with substantial purses. This schedule forms the foundation for the upcoming year. The recent development entails a framework agreement, established on June 6, involving Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund and the European tour. A joint venture called “PGA Tour Enterprises” is envisioned, in which the Public Investment Fund would hold a minority stake. This intricate arrangement requires finalization by December 31, leaving room for potential extensions.

While negotiations are ongoing, Monahan has maintained discretion regarding their specifics, even from the players. Meetings with representatives from the Public Investment Fund and the European tour have been intensive and frequent. Monahan characterizes the talks with an air of urgency and determination, emphasizing that the PGA Tour is in line with his expectations. Amidst this uncertainty, a distinct challenge emerges for the PGA Tour’s 2024 schedule start. The Sentry Tournament of Champions, a longstanding event held at Kapalua, faces uncertainties due to the wildfires near Maui, with Monahan expressing a hope to inspire the community by January.

Despite the commitment to Maui, Monahan acknowledges the unknowns and challenges ahead, leaving the tour’s presence contingent on various factors. Should circumstances prevent a Maui tournament, Monahan hasn’t entertained alternatives yet. The PGA Tour’s resolute stance underscores their dedication to navigating complex negotiations and unforeseen circumstances, all while preserving the sport’s integrity and legacy.
