Interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has provided an update on Sam Kerr’s recovery as he announced the squad for Australia’s upcoming international friendlies. Kerr, recovering from an ACL injury, remains sidelined, with Sermanni confirming that her rehabilitation is progressing well but emphasizing the long-term nature of such injuries.

“Things are getting a little bit better in rehab, but in reality, it’s still probably a 12-month injury,” he noted. Kerr’s absence adds to the challenges for the squad, which features seven uncapped players and several others with limited international experience.

The 36-player team will face Brazil in Queensland on November 28 and December 1, followed by two matches against Taiwan in Victoria on December 4 and 7.

The extended squad reflects a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent. Notable inclusions are Isabel Gomez, Leah Davidson, and Hana Lowry, each earning maiden call-ups. The matches will also celebrate significant milestones, such as Clare Polkinghorne’s retirement and Emily van Egmond’s 150th cap.

Meanwhile, key players like Cortnee Vine and Kaitlyn Torpey are unavailable due to personal and injury reasons, respectively. Despite the transitional nature of the squad, Sermanni emphasized the importance of balancing opportunities for younger players with maintaining competitiveness.

“We still want to put a team out that’s going to win games,” he said. The Matildas’ preparation coincides with Football Australia’s ongoing search for a permanent head coach, with Sermanni committed to his interim role for as long as required.
