In a recent interview, Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni emphasized a patient approach to the return of star striker Sam Kerr, who is recovering from an ACL injury sustained earlier this year. Kerr, who was injured during a Chelsea training camp in Morocco, acknowledged the difficulty of her recovery journey in a BBC Women’s Football Weekly podcast, noting that it has been long and demanding.

Sermanni stated there are no strict timelines for her return, aligning with Chelsea’s medical team’s recommendation to prioritize her full recovery over a swift comeback.

As Sermanni prepares for his debut as head coach in the Matildas’ upcoming friendly against Switzerland at Zurich’s Stadion Letzigrund, he is focused on blending the team’s experienced players with emerging young talent. Reflecting on previous setbacks, including the disappointment at the Olympics, Sermanni expressed the team’s eagerness to return to winning form.

He highlighted the contributions of established leaders within the squad while spotlighting promising players like Mary Fowler, who he believes will play a pivotal role in the Matildas’ future. Sermanni concluded that creating a supportive environment is essential, allowing veteran players to lead confidently and encouraging young players to step up with assurance.
