World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has addressed the ongoing discussion surrounding financial compensation for Ryder Cup players, affirming that he and his American teammates are more than willing to play for free.

Speaking ahead of his title defense at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Scheffler noted the long-standing tradition of representing the United States without pay. However, he expressed openness to the idea of financial rewards for players, pointing out that the Ryder Cup generates significant revenue.

“If they want to pay us to play, that’s great,” Scheffler said. “In recent years, they’ve provided funds that we can donate to charity or keep, and I don’t think it diminishes the competition at all.”

Scheffler’s remarks come amid reports that the PGA of America may begin paying U.S. players at next year’s event at Bethpage Black. The debate has drawn contrasting views, with European star Rory McIlroy declaring he would gladly pay for the privilege of representing his team.

Speaking at the DP World Tour Championship, McIlroy emphasized the honor of competing in the Ryder Cup. Despite differing perspectives, Scheffler believes financial incentives could coexist with the tournament’s competitive spirit and tradition.

“It’s about playing for your country, but if there’s money involved, it’s fine as long as it doesn’t take away from the event’s essence,” he concluded.
