The alpine skiing community is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi, who tragically passed away following a crash during training on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, Italy.

Lorenzi, a rising star, was the Italian junior overall and Super-G champion, and had recently competed in the 2023 World Junior Skiing Championships, where she placed sixth in the downhill event.

Despite being quickly taken to the hospital, Lorenzi succumbed to her injuries on October 29, with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extending heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and teammates.

Lorenzi’s passing has drawn sympathy from several prominent figures in alpine skiing, including Olympic champions Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, who both expressed their sorrow and support for Lorenzi’s family.

Shiffrin shared a message of love and comfort on social media, while Vonn described the event as a “tragic loss” and sent her thoughts to Lorenzi’s loved ones.

Italian skier Luca De Aliprandini and 2021 World Champion Petra Vlhova also shared tributes, marking a somber moment for the skiing community as they remember Lorenzi’s talent, dedication, and bright future in the sport.
