In the quarterfinals of the ITF Aldershot W25K GB Pro Series last Friday, August 18, Alex Eala demonstrated her dominance in the tennis arena. She showcased her incredible skills and determination on Saturday, August 19, proving that she possesses unwavering resolve even when faced with adversity.
This 18-year-old Filipino tennis sensation orchestrated a remarkable comeback, fighting back from being a set down and overcoming deficits in the subsequent sets. Her opponent, hometown favorite Katy Dunne, took the first set with a score of 1-6. However, Eala’s resilience shone through as she claimed the next two sets with scores of 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3, securing her spot in the tournament’s championship round in Great Britain.
Just a day earlier, Eala had dominated her match against Jenna De Falco of the United States, winning 6-1, 6-2 without facing any break points. However, in the semifinals on Saturday, Eala faced challenges finding her rhythm and spent most of the match playing catch-up.
The opening set saw Eala fall behind 3-0 after an early break. While she managed to get on the scoreboard at 3-1, Dunne proceeded to win the next three games, taking a one-set lead.
Dunne continued her strong performance into the second set, coming within one game of victory at 5-3. It was at this critical juncture that Eala embarked on a remarkable comeback, setting the stage for one of the most epic fights of her career.
Facing elimination, Eala dug deep and leveled the score at 5-5, forcing a tiebreak. She surged ahead from a 2-2 tie to claim the second set.
In the deciding set, Eala faced another setback as she was broken early, falling behind 2-0. Nevertheless, she rallied, winning five consecutive games to establish a commanding 5-2 lead. She ultimately closed out the match in the 9th game, after a grueling three hours and thirty-eight minutes of play.
In the finals on Sunday, August 20, Eala would go head-to-head with the sixth seed, Destanee Alava of Australia. Interestingly, Alava had been Eala’s doubles partner just the week prior in the Roehampton W25K GB Pro Series, where they reached the quarterfinals. However, their history also included a match last June, when Alava bested Eala with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the ITF W25+H Tauste-Zaragoza tournament.
