Argentina’s triumph over Australia with a scoreline of 2-1 in the round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup sparked enthusiastic reactions, including one from the 1990 US Open champion, Gabriela Sabatini. The former world No 3, a prominent figure in tennis during the late 1980s and early 1990s, expressed her joy on Twitter with a spirited “Siiiiiiii VAMOOOOSS🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 @Argentina #WorldCup #WorldcupQatar2022.”

Sabatini, an Argentine icon and one of the most marketable stars of her era, emerged as a prodigy in the early ’80s. Her success extended to the senior circuit, where she clinched the Olympics silver in 1988 and the US Open title in 1990. Her illustrious career includes a total of 27 WTA titles, notably the season-ending WTA Finals in 1988 and 1994.

In a memorable showdown in 1990, Sabatini secured her first and only Major singles title by defeating Steffi Graf at the US Open. The 20-year-old Sabatini avenged back-to-back losses to Graf in New York, sealing the title with a 6-2, 7-6 victory.

Graf and Sabatini, besides being frequent opponents in singles matches, formed a formidable doubles pairing, winning the Wimbledon title in 1988. The Argentine tennis legend also secured an Olympic silver medal in 1988 in Seoul.

Gabriela Sabatini’s recent celebration on social media highlights not only her excitement for Argentina’s success in the FIFA World Cup but also her enduring connection to her country’s sporting achievements.
