Happy Birthday, Steffi! Tennis legend Graf turns 55

Steffi Graf remains an iconic figure in tennis history, celebrated for her extraordinary achievements and indelible impact on the sport. Born on June 14, 1969, in Brühl, Germany, Graf was introduced to tennis at the age of three by her father, Peter.

Her talent was evident early, as she swiftly climbed the junior ranks, winning prestigious titles such as the European Championships. At just 13, she became one of the youngest players ever ranked on the WTA tour, and by 16, she had cemented her place among the Top 10.

Graf’s breakthrough came in 1987 when she secured her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, ending the year as the World No. 1. The following year, she achieved a historic Golden Slam, winning all four major titles and the Olympic gold medal—a feat unmatched in tennis history.

Over her illustrious career, Graf amassed 22 Grand Slam singles titles, the third-most in history, and held the World No. 1 ranking for a record 377 weeks. Her playing style, characterized by a powerful forehand and unparalleled athleticism, dominated the sport through the 1980s and 1990s.
