Interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has criticized the team’s leadership for its lack of long-term planning, particularly as the squad faces an inevitable generational shift.

Speaking ahead of a friendly against Chinese Taipei, Sermanni highlighted the pressing need to prepare for the future, especially with key players like Sam Kerr, Steph Catley, and Katrina Gorry nearing the twilight of their careers.

The absence of numerous first-choice players due to club commitments, injuries, and mental health considerations underscores the urgency of blooding younger talents.

Sermanni plans to field emerging players such as Daniela Galic, Winonah Heatley, and Natasha Prior, alongside A-League Women stars, to broaden the team’s depth as they look ahead to hosting the 2026 Asian Cup.
