Simona Halep Receives Four-Year Ban for Doping Violations

Twice Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been handed a suspension until October 2026 by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), following two separate anti-doping rule violations.
The 31-year-old Romanian, a former Wimbledon and French Open champion, had been provisionally suspended since October 2022 after testing positive for the banned blood-booster roxadustat during the US Open last year.

The first charge involved an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for roxadustat, detected through regular urine testing at the 2022 US Open. Halep vehemently denied knowingly taking the banned substance, presenting evidence that small amounts of the anaemia drug entered her system from a licensed supplement contaminated with roxadustat. The tribunal acknowledged her argument but ruled that the volume ingested could not have resulted in the concentration found in the positive sample.

The second charge pertained to irregularities in Halep’s Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). Three independent experts unanimously concluded that “likely doping” explained the anomalies in her profile. While Halep remains determined to fight for the truth, the case is subject to appeal. Notably, her achievements include reaching the number one spot in the WTA rankings in 2017, winning Wimbledon in 2019, and securing the French Open title a year earlier.
