Following a six-year retirement, three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn has announced her return to competitive skiing. Vonn, who retired in 2019 after an illustrious 18-year career marked by physical injuries, revealed her decision in an exclusive interview with *The New York Times* on November 14.

The 40-year-old alpine skiing legend cited a renewed sense of purpose following her partial right knee replacement in April, which enabled her to ski pain-free for the first time in years. “I had a smile so wide it was coming through the back of my helmet,” Vonn said. Inspired by her love for speed and sage advice from retired tennis star Roger Federer, she now feels ready to squeeze more “juice out of the lemon.”

Vonn’s immediate focus is rejoining Team USA and preparing for the World Cup circuit, which could see her return to competitive racing as early as next month. Despite her aspirations, Vonn is pragmatic about the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the journey rather than chasing accolades.

With 82 World Cup victories to her name, including 12 in Cortina d’Ampezzo—the site of the 2026 Winter Olympics—Vonn acknowledges the possibility of a fourth Olympic medal. However, she insists she’s not racing to prove anything. “It’s just me and the mountain like it was in the beginning,” she said. As the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season unfolds, fans eagerly await Vonn’s next chapter, which may culminate in a triumphant return to the Olympic stage.
