In his latest appearance at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Tiger Woods provided golf enthusiasts with an encouraging assessment of his comeback. After completing 72 holes at even par, Woods expressed his elation, using the term “ecstatic” to encapsulate his feelings about the tournament. This marked his return to competitive play since undergoing fusion surgery on his right ankle following his withdrawal from the Masters. Woods secured the 18th position in the 20-man event, finishing with a final-round 72 at Albany, completing 72 holes without incident or reinjury to his right leg, which had been a persistent concern since a significant injury in a 2021 car accident.
Despite his placement in the tournament, Woods acknowledged the progress he has made, stating, “I’ve come a long way being a little bit rusty to like four days and knock off a lot of rust, which is great.” At the age of 47, Woods emphasized the significance of physically playing and competing again after his surgery and extended hiatus. While expressing a desire for better performance, he highlighted the positive aspect of the experience, underscoring the joy of being on the course with fellow competitors.
Analyzing his gameplay, Woods noted his success in driving the ball, demonstrating considerable power despite his surgery and prolonged absence. His ability to drive the green at the 307-yard 14th hole stood out as a notable achievement. Despite facing challenges in other aspects of his play, Woods displayed confidence in his current approach, stating, “What I’ve been working on is right there and maybe just tighten up a little bit.”
Looking ahead, Woods has set his sights on the PNC Championship, often referred to as his “fifth major,” where he will compete alongside his 14-year-old son, Charlie. Following this event, he plans to prepare for the 2024 season, expressing his belief that competing once a month is a realistic goal. Despite acknowledging some soreness, Woods remains optimistic about maintaining a rhythm by balancing recovery and practice, outlining his plan to get in better shape for the challenges that lie ahead.
